Understanding and Testing for Mold Toxicity

Understanding and Testing for Mold Toxicity

Mold toxicity can be lethal to anyone; adults, children, and even pets. You need to know if it's affecting you or someone you love.

Here are some of the common questions I get and see others asking online:

"How do I know if my child has mold?"

"My doctor doesn't know anything about mold, how do I test?"

"My doctor says mold doesn't cause these symptoms."

"What's the difference between mold and mycotoxins?"

"How do I check my house for mold?"

"Are these symptoms consistent with mold exposure?"

"How do I get out of this mess?"

"How do I fix my house?"

Please share this post when you see similar questions. People shouldn't have to wait for help with mold. Time is of the essence.

What's The Difference between mold, mold spores, and mycotoxins?

The first thing that most people don't understand is the difference between mold, mold spores, and mycotoxins. And, specifically, where the toxicity comes from.

Mold is a type of fungi. Its purpose is to decompose things back to nature, to break things down. It can grow almost anywhere, but for this blog post, you need to know that mold that grows on water-damaged materials is public enemy number one. It's growing there because an environment was made (warm, wet, dark) for it to grow to break down that lumber in your house, or the paper on your drywall, the carpet, etc. And yes, mold CAN grow in people as well, this is called 'mold colonization.'

Mold spores are what the colony release to keep growing, and it's how it reproduces. Mold spores are everywhere, literally. Outdoors, indoors, from Spring to Fall. Every time you open the door on your house, more spores come in. When you open your car door, spores go in. Every time you breathe, mold spores are going into your body. They are hardier than the mold colony they came from and can survive almost any condition.

Once the spores find a warm, damp, and dark area to take root, they will start a new colony. This is the reason mold species matter, some are very toxic while others not so much. Breathing in common outdoor molds won't affect you like inhaling in Stachybotrys spores (highly toxic) will.

Mycotoxins are the toxic part of mold that cause the symptoms you hear about. This is what makes most people sick. Although, colonization of mold itself in the body, especially the lungs, can cause severe problems as well.

Mycotoxins are released from the colony and spores of some dangerous fungi. These are not alive, they don't grow, they don't replicate. Mycotoxins are not mold, but a toxic metabolite of mold that can quickly enter your system by breathing and even through the skin. Mycotoxins can be carcinogenic and wreak havoc on the liver.

Think of it this way...

Mold grows in your home due to a damp, dark area that may or may not have had a leak. Attics, basements, in walls, under flooring and more.

The colony then releases mold spores that float around your house. They move with every movement in the air (like walking) and especially with forced-air heating and cooling.

The colony releases mycotoxins and they're now circulating in the air and are also sitting on spores that you breathe in with every breath.

Mycotoxins need to be bound out of your body if you cannot detox them on your own due to genetics.

What does mold toxicity look like?

Mold toxicity can look like almost anything and everything (kind of like Lyme). That's why it's so hard to get a proper diagnosis from a medical doctor. Medical doctors aren't trained in mold and can misdiagnose your issues due to symptoms matching diseases they're more easily looking for.

While many of these symptoms are found in many health issues, these are commonly found with mold exposure:

Brain fog

Abdominal pain (especially kids)

Night sweats (Babesia is also known for this)

Vision problems

Fatigue

Neurological issues (numbness, tingling)

Metallic taste in the mouth

Increased thirst and urination

Skin problems (dry, scaly, itchy)

Asthma, shortness of breath

Digestive and respiratory problems

Nasal congestion, postnasal drip

Mold is also so immunosuppressive that it can allow any other viral, bacterial, or parasite infections to launch into full-blown activation.

You can head straight into auto-immune conditions due to the lack of a modulated immune system.

So what can mold toxicity look like? The question is, what doesn't it look like.

This is why testing is essential.

So what do you test and how?

If you suspect mold toxicity may be in play in your health challenges, you should absolutely test. Even if it comes back negative, it's worth ruling it out. Living with mold exposure can stop all progress in healing, so knowing, either way, can speed up your journey. But, the order of testing matters, do it like this:

First test: Mycotoxin testing

This is the test you need to find out if your body is harboring mycotoxins. The mycotoxin test is usually a urine sample, but there is a new serum test available too.

This test will tell you which mycotoxins are found (if any) and which species of mold they are from.

There is a chance that if your body isn't able to excrete them at all, that they may not be found. Rerunning the test with provocation is an option if you feel something was missed.

Remember, this is where many people get confused; having mycotoxins in your system doesn't mean you have mold itself colonized and growing in your body.

Mycotoxins can also be found in foods prone to molding or growing fungus on the crops themselves. For example, corn and peanuts. Read more here

Second test: Organic Acids Test (OAT)

This test will tell you if you have mold colonizing in your gut. If you have had heavy mold exposure, it could very well have taken root right in your body. It's scary to think about but relatively easy to catch with this test.

Without knowing, you may focus on just mycotoxins and not the actual fungus and yeast growing in your body.

This test measures over 70 organic acids and covers results for bacteria, viruses, mitochondria health, neurotransmitters, amino acids, fungus, and more.

This test should be done after the mycotoxin test because you don't want a false sense of security if you see no mold colonization. Most people with mold toxicity are dealing with just mycotoxins and not mold colonization. Don't mistake a clear result on this test for not being mold toxic.

Third test: ERMI Testing

The ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index) is what you use to test your house, workplace, school, or whatever area you want to check for mold. The simplest method uses a swiffer to collect dust to analyze mold species and spore counts.

This test analyzes the dust for DNA from mold spores. It identifies not only the species but also the concentration of spores. You can determine what types of mold are in your house (toxic or not) and how much is there. You now know if you found the source of your problem or not.

Don't use air tests, tape strips, or cheap options from hardware stores. You don't skimp on checking where your mold exposure is coming from.

Doing an ERMI first could cause you to miss mold toxicity (mycotoxins in your system) due to the fact that your exposure could have come from anywhere at any time. Having a clean ERMI at home doesn't mean you weren't exposed to toxic mold at school, work, while on vacation or other. You can still be mold toxic even if your home ERMI is fine.

Now, what do I do?

There's no taking action until you know what you're dealing with. Let's not guess, let's test.

Once we know if you have mold colonization, we can target it with the appropriate herbal complexes. If we know there are mycotoxins, we will target those with binders. Once you have done your ERMI's and determined the source, you need to avoid it at all costs.

We need to start with foundational support always, though. This includes liver support, gallbladder support, mitochondrial support, kidney, lymphatic, adrenal and more. Your body can't launch a wellness campaign without first supporting your organs, glands and detoxification pathways.

Recovering from mold is a process. It's not quick and easy, no chronic condition is. But, you need to see what you're dealing with to have a starting point that success can be measured against.

Get your labs done, get on a proper mold protocol, and start walking this back. You can do this.

Here are some of the resources I use with clients. I'm available for consultations if you have questions about symptoms, testing, protocols, and more. Please, don't post a lab on Facebook and ask people what it means and what they think you should do next. :)
